1. S-class Mercedes-Benz

GENERAL INFORMATION

S-class Mercedes-Benz

Model 190 with love called "malyshom-Bentsem" was made from 1982 to 1993, but also now it does not seem old. It became the response to release by BMW concern in 1982 to completely processed 3rd series. Both cars – representatives of middle class and direct competitors. The new class C which succeeded a series 201 in 1993 still to a large extent personifies quality of production of Mercedes.

As for cars of the new class C which succeeded the 190th model, these cars in many respects differ from predecessors to the best. Their bodies serve without any problems till present time. The full serial equipment (adjustable seats, ABS, the safety airbag for the driver) provides pleasant driving and safety. But also in these cars there is a number of shortcomings. So, in some cars of release of 1994 there is an aerodynamic noise because of bad adjustment of locks of forward doors, and in release cars till May, 1995 – a fragile hook clamp of a cowl. In January, 1996 545.000 cars were recalled for defect elimination.

Fabric covering, as well as in cars of the previous generation, gloomy. Behind there is not enough place for passengers, front seats in some cars of release of 1994 creak (it, however, easily is eliminated with simple lubricant of the corresponding elements). Only in the few cars (about 3 percent) of release of the same 1994 the covering of internal handles of doors departs. Besides, the scratch and a gnash when raising glasses of forward doors in cars of 1994-1996 are heard, in particular, in hot season (it is eliminated in December, 1995 by replacement of the directing sled and lubricant).

Assembly of inside of cars of the S-class is executed carefully, only separate ordinary-looking plastic details spoil impression a little. In cars of all years of release a roof hatch sled is badly adjusted, emergence of scratches in operating time of the drive of the hatch is possible. Besides, at all cars there can be a noise at operation of gates of system of ventilation of salon, and also deformation (swelling) of the top part of plastic at the basis of forward side glasses after 1–2 years of operation. The last phenomenon is especially characteristic of cars of release of 1993.

The lever of the parking brake is installed in cars of 1994-1995 hardly released (especially in cold season). It happens because of too thick layer of a corrosion-resistant coating in the lower part of a body that causes bad movement of a cable of the drive of the lever. In the spring of 1995 cars were recalled in the place of sale for elimination of a shortcoming. In general, shock-absorbers, disks of brakes and especially coupling show durability much above the average level. Upon purchase it must be kept in mind that the hydraulic booster has to be serviceable, otherwise his replacement will manage in a round sum. A steering wheel too big in cars of all years of release.

Have shortcomings and engines of cars of a class C. So, in the C220 version of release of 1994 the raised idling turns (they spontaneously increase up to 2000 revolutions per minute) because of defect in the drive of butterfly valves are noted. This defect can be eliminated by change of a fixing pad of a cable. In the C230 version to a turbocompressor there are separate cases of failures of the compressor because of weakening of fastening of the air duct at the exit of the air filter (it is eliminated since November, 1995).

All cars of a class C are characterized by bad dispersal at not heated-up engine therefore until the motor does not get warm up to the working temperature, the pedal of an accelerator needs to be pressed carefully, carefully dosing supply of gas mixture. In C200D/C220D versions of release of 1994 there are failures in operation of the engine, in particular, during acceleration at average turns (because of problems in the computer (a chain of management of TNVD)). On separate cars the computer of engine management was replaced on a guarantee. In versions 220D/250D of release of 1994 noise of valves and the nagaroobrazovaniye on final valves causing loss of power because of decrease in a compression in cylinders take place (valves are not closed completely). The problem is fixed in 1995 by drawing a chromic covering on cores of valves.

Electric equipment very good and complaints does not cause. The only thing that it is possible to note here, changes of adjustment of external rear-view mirrors when closing doors in cars of 1994 (a class C). In the cars equipped with the air conditioner after its switching off glasses, especially in case of strong pollution of the filter immediately mist over.

What to prefer?

Cars with the automatic transmission are in small demand in the market of second-hand vehicles. As for a new series C, the best choice – the C180 version. It has a little smaller power, than C200 and C220 versions, but at smooth driving it will not be felt. The Elegance C200 version with the 136 h.p. engine is more expensive because of higher level of finishing: wooden inserts, power windows on all doors, the electric drive of the external antenna. The powerful C280 version with the excellent 6-cylinder engine – very pleasant car. Also deserves respect and the diesel C250D version though it also costs expensive. In C-class cars with the automatic transmission it "is softer", than mechanical.

The Mercedes car with the 201st body is the standing purchase. And it even still more belongs to cars of a new series C.

Possible malfunctions

In the C220 1994 version of: the raised idling turns because of defect in the drive of butterfly valves.

In the C230 version with a turbo-supercharging: a possibility of refusals of a turbocompressor because of weakening of fastening of the air duct at the exit of the air filter.

In all cars of a class C: bad dispersal at not heated-up engine.

In C220D 1994 C200D/versions of: failures in work, in particular, during acceleration at average turns of the engine (because of problems in a chain of management of TNVD).

In C250D 1994 C220D/versions of: noise of valves, formation of a deposit on final valves.

In cars of 1994-1995: hardly released (especially in cold season) the lever of the parking brake.

The progressing deformation of a plastic frame of external rear-view mirrors.

The blackening of a covering of a sun-protection peak amplifying eventually (especially in cars with the hatch in a roof), deformation of a plastic frame of a ware box after 6 years of operation.

In some cars of release of 1994: aerodynamic noise because of bad adjustment of locks of forward doors.

In release cars till May, 1995: fragility of a hook clamp of a cowl.

In cars of 1994-1996: a scratch and a gnash when raising glasses of forward doors.

Bad adjustment of a sled of the hatch in a roof, a possibility of emergence of scratches in operating time of the drive of the hatch, deformation (swelling) of the top part of plastic in the basis of forward side glasses after 1–2 years of operation.

In cars of release of 1994 with the air conditioner: fogging of glasses after switching off of the conditioner.
